Case Study 1- You belong With Me (MUSIC VIDEO)

 You Belong With Me

Basic Narrative:

This music video follows a girl that views herself as 'different', unpopular and overlooked by most of her classmates. However at the beginning we learn that her next door neighbour is a popular jock whom she thinks she loves. After a short interaction using paper signs from across the street, he closes his curtains and a montage of Taylor dancing and trying on different clothes play. He looks back at her to see her dancing and laughs.

Then cuts to the next day when they are sitting on a bench together when his 'mean' girlfriend pulls up in her car to take him to school. After this there is a leap to an American football game where the girlfriend is seen flirting with another player: Taylor sees this from the band stands and looks sad for him.

The final sequence is Taylor deciding to go to prom and going from "geek to chic". At the prom she discovers the boy also loves her and they go in to kiss each other

Close-ups:
Used to show ‘protagonists’ reaction to story playing out around them. Taylor’s character has just seen her crush’s

current girlfriend flirt with another man. To anchor this as impacting Taylor, there ia close up to focus audiences on her emotions. Through thiframe we learn she doesn’t just

want him to be with her, she also cares about his happiness.

Her code of expression demonstrates shock and sympathy.

Andrew Goodwin (lens within lens and star persona):

In this shot, the camera is angled towards the mirror showing

the back of Taylor’s of head (over the shoulder) and what she
would see of herself in the mirror. This allows the audience to feel like they are on a more personal level, seeing into her mind. It also adds depth to the frame. Within this scene, there is a montage of her trying on outfits and being the quirky and relatable ‘girl next door’ dancing around her room. This is a common persona she creates in her music videos.
